I'm pretty sure that my mother and I spent the vast majority of every summer during the mid- to late-80s demanding more Heath bar chips in our Blizzards from the poor workers at various Northern Michigan Dairy Queens.
I'm not going to lie. If I know anything about successful negotiations or hostile takeovers, it's from watching her reach her arm into the window of the Dairy Queen, little red spoon in hand, and instruct the ice cream maker how to put yet another scoop of Heath Bar chips into the cup and whirrrrrr. Because, honestly, if you don't know how to follow my directions, what good are you? Don't listen to that man - he's the manager of a Dairy Queen. He's an idiot.
While we were never profane or cruel, I will say that things got a little out of hand when she shoved me up through the window of the Dairy Queen so that I could show the tearful ice cream girl how to just "do things the right way, the first time, dammit."
I'm pretty sure that just by writing this blog entry, her telepathic intuition is affecting her, making her get on Google Maps and find the nearest Dairy Queen, thinking that it's time to bust out the flip flops and Hawaiian t-shirts, and sending me a text message asking me how Weight Watchers is going.
And it's not her fault. Have you ever eaten a Heath Bar? I mean, my dog. It's amazing. You can't do anything about it. It's sweet, it's salty, it's chocolatey and crunchy. I mean, are you not in O face mode right now? Hello.
In honor of my mother and all our wonderful Heath Bar experiences, I made these cookies a while ago. Upon reading the recipe, my mom in turn made them and sent me this text message:
"Made your cookies. It's ok that you never became a doctor. You've moved on to bigger and better things."
So thank you, Dorie. I think that your next book should be called "Baking with Heath Bars: From My Home to Yours."

Oh, "Baking With Heath Bars" - I'd line up to get the first copy off the presses. And I'd push you AND your mom out of the way!! Now I want a Heath Bar (my crunch bars are long gone as I made them weeks ago). Love your photos and your post made me laugh.
Nancy
Ha ha - my husband and I love the Snickers Blizzards. Now you've got me thinking of one......
oh heath bars... they were the star of a dessert my mom used to make--death by chocolate. kill me now :)
I love your Dairy Queen story. I totally agree, these caramel crunch bars were absolutely wonderful. YUM! (even better with ice cream, if that's possible)
bwahahahahahaha!!!
I always tell the DQ people to add more...no another scoop full....no that isn't enough. I want a little ice cream with my toppings.
Too funny. My friends actually OWN a DQ - I can get whatever I want. :) (it helps to know people - hahaha)
Cute quote from your mom about being a doc, too - that one gave me a much needed giggle.
I didn't work in a DQ, but I did work in a small ice cream shop in my hometown when I was in high school, and now all of the long-suppressed memories have come flooding back. The boss on one hand saying "just 2 Tbs of toppings" and the customers screaming for more. Stressful business, I tell you. Your bars look fabulous -- and I can completely imagine a crunch bar mixed in to a Blizzard.
Your mom sounds like my kind of lady! Those bars look fabulous.
Haha love that story with your mom. Your pics have me drooling.
I think the best part is that your mom actually knows what a text is ... mine hasn't worked her way up to that period in time yet. We're still working on the e-mail "thingy." Ha!
Your bars look sinful ... and certainly have me considering a raid on the local DQ.
You know, it's funny. I've never had Dairy Queen, but whenever I see those commercials with their sundaes, I vow to find one and eat a whole sundae!!! Your bars look great!
My mom loves Heath bars too, they're her absolute favorite candy. She makes these ridiculous brownies that have Heath bars mixed in them. Your bars look absolutely amazing. I can't wait to make them for my mother the next time that I'm home.
Loved your DQ story! These bars were wonderful! Since you love Heath bars, have you tried the Chocolate Toffee cookies on Smitten Kitchen?
